This blows Jay, and I'm sorry it happened, but 10am to 4pm is a nutty suggestion.

The baseball stadium is very well known as a place not to walk alone after midnight or the wee hours. Going there, Cerro de Cuarto, up behind Baratillo, or Valenicana at night amongst other spots are fairly notorious for this type of thing, which unfortunately you don't find out till you've been here for a while.

There are dodgy hoods in town, which are fortunately few compared to the whole. As a general rule, given where you live, where many friends of mine have been harassed, I would highly recommend simply biting the bullet and taking a cab home whenever you're out past midnight. It's the cost of a drink and it buys you piece of mind.

Guanajuato is a very safe city compared to almost any others in Mexico or anywhere else. But dodgy dark alleys with bad reps should be avoided wherever you happen to live.
