Night Travel between SM and GTO
Is it safe at night to travel between San Miguel and Guanajuato? I tried to post a "poll" for this question, but I don't see it. So, is it risky or generally safe or very safe? We have been warned so many times about travel at night that I am moved to ask ;-)

RE: Night Travel between SM and GTO
Two routes, one vía Santa Rosa/Dolores goes thru mountains, while other vía La Sauceda is newer and more gradual. Both routes are two lane, curvy, quite so in stretches, and not well lit or populated for most part.
We are highly experienced road travelers but avoid routes like these after sunset. Both go thru long stretches of farmlands so wandering livestock alone says no-go. The Santa Rosa route is a lovely drive in daytime, the newer not as scenic. |

RE: Night Travel between SM and GTO
I've driven from SMA to GTO at night lots of times. The La Sauceda-Xoconoxtle-Cieneguita route. Haven't had any problems. But, here's some notes.
- Ignore the signs that tell you not to take the turn to Cieneguita. Yes, the bridge washed out 1 1/2 years ago. The temporary bridge that has replaced it is fine. (There are no signs whatsoever of any work on the new one that was promised.) - There were some incidents a few months ago of criminal groups putting tire-puncturing spikes in the road at the intersection near San Martín. (That's the one where you turn left for SMA, or go straight for Juventino Rosas.) Recently, however, I've seen police parked at this intersection and the one at Xoconoxtle. And, I have definitely been advised against driving to Juventino Rosas at night. |
