Needed business in GTO - a bakery and ?

I paid my first-ever visit to Mega this morning. Found several types of bread that fit my criteria. They also have baguettes, which I don't recall seeing in the panaderias.

This was also my first visit to Pozeulas, and I wasn't even aware, until now, that GTO has a "centro commercial". Had a latte at the Italian Coffee Company. Although I've seen these establishments all over Mexico, this is the first time I've had a coffee in one.

I agree with Don that the best bolillos in town are at the panadar?a La Purissma across from the Jardin Reforma. They also make pan integral, though not in a loaf form. This is a roll, scored on the top like a concha, usually displayed in the window. You can slice it either direction, toast it, use it for sandwiches, etc. This pan integral is not to be confused with a softer brown-like hamburger bun type roll that is usually found in the main rack of the bakery goods. In the cookie department, lately they have been having some really nice plain sugar cookies, unlike the usual Mexican lard cookies. These cookies are usually displayed in the center island and are delicious.

I have bought pan integral at a bakery on Alhondiga, just a door or two toward Dos Rios at the glorieta. The sign says pan artesanal. It was very good, but they don't always have it.

As long as I can find good bolillos I can survive. I have purchased some decent Onion Bread at the La Comer in Zihua so hopefully also in Guanajuato

Now that I've located a source of bread, my next project is finding Greek-style yogurt. Or if not that, at least the kind where the fruit is at the bottom, and you have to stir it. Is this available anywhere?

I agree with Don, the Duck and el GURU.....I would NOT like Guanajuato to be another SMA or anything like it, although it has changed quite a bit in the 8 years I've been here, and for the worse, except the beautiful paving of some streets and callejones around el centro. You can get excellent whole wheat bread from UNICORN AZUL, the tienda naturista close to Plaza Baratillo, and also, from Restaurante ABUE, just above the same Plaza. Both have excellent breads. Also, both Comercial Mexicana and MEGA have a selection of different breads cooked fresh daily, including dark rye, garlic, integral, olive and nut bread are the main ones ( at MEGA ), and cheap. My fav is the nut bread, not sweet but thick and chewy.

I'd LOVE to be able to pop into a COSTCO here in GTO and get some of my fav goodies, cheap even, and go to a Thai, Italian, Greek, Korean, Japonese. a GOOD ITALIAN PIZZA PLACE or other ethnic GOOD restaurant, but generally, the locals do NOT support them and the restaurants flop here often. Besides, I would really dislike GTO becomming even MORE americanized. If I want American, I'd just move there. I love MEXICO and the MEXICAN lifestyle here, easy going and pacific. Rent is cheap, people are generally happy and friendly, the fresh fruit and vegetables are inexpensive and the crime rate here is very low compared to every city I've been to in the USA. There is a lot of JUNK sold all over MEXICO, you just have to be more careful about buying anything.

My suggestion for an EX-PAT business that would really take off here: A used everything CHEAP store ( except clothes ). You can pick up LOTS of stuff from DF, San MIguel and other cities that are sold on the street, like one day a week, and bring them here for resale at GOOD prices and you will have people continually coming in and buying. NOTHING LIKE THAT HERE., although the "pawn shops" here do sell used stuff, they usually ask TOP prices for some very used stuff.

I'm not sure what you mean by "Greek-style-yogurt". I've been to over twenty countries, including Greece, and yogurt was yogurt everywhere. I suggest taking a non-sweetened good yogurt here, and puree some fruit and mix it the way you like it yourself, that way, you'll have an excellent tasting "natural yogurt" without excessive sweeteners in it. ALPURA sells the best non-sweetened plain yogurt here (only two brands sell non-sweetened). In Comercial Mexicana and MEGA.

Went to Unicornia Azul, across the street from Baratillo, today. Got a loaf of bread and strawberry yogurt. Didn't care much for the bread; too dry. However, the yogurt is just what I've been looking for.

The new Indian "mini mall" in Baratillo has a bakery offering very good fresh breads. They are served by the restaurant there as well.
