RE: used items for the home
Been thinking about this more .... There's much more than garage sales actually, but "depende" pretty much sums it up as my universal go-to word. And while you can think of Gringo garage or moving sales as maybe having a lot of nice stuff, well maybe so or maybe no. I didn't delve too much into what you are looking for, so maybe that would help. Otherwise this is a hard question to answer because one person might accept a power company cable spool as a coffee table and the next person would think used furniture would mean an antique French mahogany with a couple of scratches. Also you have the crowd that buys junk furniture, paints on a new face in any number of styles and then something old is new again.
If you are looking for scuffed up and bruised old stuff, there's shops all over GTO, San Miguel and other nearby cities where you can go and look at the piece and maybe think of something you might be able to do with it. And I say that in my typical tongue in cheek style because some of this stuff needs a funeral ceremony rather than a buyer. (The words "fire wood" come to mind way too often.) I always think what the blip is this stuff and then in walks some whiz kid who knows the kind of wood , how sturdy the design, strength of the legs, they whip out some glue and a brush and when they are done with it I no longer recognize it. And while I've been to a sizable amount of these junk furniture outlets, I was tagging along and now I couldn't find one of these places if my life depended on it. Also I don't know what your budget is but all over Guadalajara they have specialty furniture makers. And I think the bus takes a little over 4 hours to get there (of course if furniture shopping you're going to likely need a truck or trailer or you'll be in the same condition the other poster who recently said they are moving to Patzcuaro and be also looking for a hand. Guadalajara is a little like NYC in that different neighborhoods specialize in specific trades. I can recall across from Tacos Fish Lapaz there's a shop that makes those woven chairs that are covered in leather and they are not too pricey. These are a staple of Mexico and seem to go just about anywhere from dining to patio. And no one should think about furnishing a home before hitting Guad's suburb Tonala. Lots to see there even if you don't buy a thing. Now if you walk around the outskirts of Guadalajara you can find a private room hotel for $20-$30 but you do have to do a little looking and it's not always on booking (dot) con but check on the outskirts of town. It'll normally take a little research to come up with an economical room and if you have a bad neck, best bring your own pillow (think they stuff theirs with ducks rather than feathers.) Otherwise I am not sure why more people aren't helping you because they sell junk furniture everywhere if that would work for you. Maybe if you were more specific, some of the shop-o-hollics I know are lurking here will step in and lend a suggestion. Shopping in San Miguel is pretty much out unless you head deep into the unknown there because anything of value has likely been snatched up. Anyway enough of this, as it's not getting you anywhere but maybe it will conjure up someone who wants to at least point out one of my errors, which is actually a really good skill I have in my toolbox, and that's provoking people into verbalizing various nuances on a theme. |
