Advice on Paying Social Security for Hired Help?
For those of you who have hired contractors, plumbers, painters, electricians, etc., what has been your experience in paying not only their wages but also their social security? I have been cautioned that one can get in trouble by not paying it, with the implication that paying it is a hassle (ergo, better to hire an architect to oversee everything and take care of such business details). I'd love to hear your experiences and advice. Many thanks!

Paying benefits is required on large projects that employ people full time for extended periods. A part time housekeeper should not qualify. People you hire to do one time fixes also don't require those payments be made. Renovate or build a house and you'll need to make sure the IMSS payments are made. Either an architect or accountant can do this. Make sure you have recipts of payments made on your behalf.

I wouldn't think a job that size would require IMSS payments. But when in doubt, ask an accountant or lawyer.
