Car insurance

Hi to all,
Moved here from CA, with my CA license plates. I have my car registered in Mexico with Mexican insurance. My question is, do I also have to maintain my CA registration and insurance? Would appreciate any info/advice. Thanks, Patsy Barovetto

I don't mean to be a buzz kill but I think you may have some problems. By saying you have your car registered in Mexico did you mean you have a sticker on the wind shield and a permit to bring it in? Did you get your insurance over the internet for US cars travelling in Mexico? I don't think a Mexican car insurance company will insure a car unless it has Mexican plates. As long as you stay a temporary resident you can keep your California plates but if you become a permanent resident your not allowed to have a foreign plated car here. So you have to take it out of the country or convert it to a Mexican car which is expensive and might not be possible depending on the age of the car. If you let your Ca registration lapse you can probably let the insurance lapse as well but in Colorado as long as it was registered you had to prove it wasn't on the road or stored which was a major pain. And if you do let the registration lapse I don't know what would happen if you need to take the car back.

Also What ever you do don't let a Mexican use your car. If they happen to get pulled over you can say adios to your car they will take it and you won't get it back.

It's been awhile since i did the foreign car thing and the rules do change so hopefully you'll get some more responses
