Questions, Questions, Questions
I note in my Lonely Planet Guide/Bible that in the Months of January/February The Guanajuato State Fair is on in Leon.
As a Ole Iowa Farm boy I am a serious fair goer. So I am more than curious about just what is there to see & do. Are there livestock Expos? According to LP there are agricultural displays of various types. Also lots of entertainment. All info welcome. |

RE: Questions, Questions, Questions
I've been to the Leon fair several times, but I've never seen livestock. Maybe I missed the animals, but I doubt it. There's a big amusement park, big name concerts at night, an ice skating show, a dolphin show, lots of fast food stands, bars, and tons of booths selling all kinds of things -- shoes, clothes, household items and imported junk. I remember seeing livestock years ago at a smaller fair -- I think it was in the summer in Silao.

RE: Questions, Questions, Questions
I, too, grew up in the Midwest where fairs were a big deal. I love them! I've been to the Guanajuato State Fair a couple of times. It's different. There are no animal displays, except for a kind of petting zoo for children at the back edge of the fair. There is a big cattle barn, but only buyers and sellers can enter, for fear of brucellosis. There is an old fashioned carousel near the entrance, and a really big carnival/midway further in. Big entertainment at night. Tons of food booths, but it seems that Corona has a lock on the beer! The exhibition halls are cavernous, with booths that sell a huge variety of things. I was especially interested in the Guanajuato hall which has all things from people and municipalities of Guanajuato. Some artesanias scattered throughout. Upstairs of the halls, there are what appear to be acres of leather goods sellers. Outdoors, there are purveyors of all the humble things that small farm families in the campo might need, from enamel pots to hand tools to ropes and plastic ware.

RE: Questions, Questions, Questions
Gracias to both of you. Not ideal but sounds like worth a day of my month in Guanajuato.

RE: Questions, Questions, Questions
Last year there were cows, pigs, sheep, ostriches, there may have been goats, and some beautiful horses. We watched some kids do a little trick riding on horses for a while. There was also a smattering of agriculture booths. We spent the afternoon and evening there and had a great time!
