question about posting to forums/pm/email

Hello all,

I don't have much experience posting to this forum, so I'm hoping someone can explain how private messages and emails work on this site.

I had written a PM to someone a few months ago, but after clicking to send, I had no record in my profile that it went out, and never got a response from the individual. I had a similar experience today when I tried using the direct email option--- there was no record in my 'sent messages' folder. When I clicked 'send', a message came on the screen to tell me it was sent successfully, though I wonder if it has been received and why I can't see it in the 'sent messages' folder. Is this normal or is there something wrong with my account settings?

Also, what is the difference between a PM and email? I would guess PM means the person has to log in to the forums to see the message and email would go directly to whatever email address they used to set up the GTOlist account.
