George Seurat’s neo-impressionistic masterpiece A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte ushered in a radical new style of painting: pointillism.



Tiny dots of paint are layered on top of each other to create color, depth and texture.

Using Seurat’s canvas as inspiration, Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine have created this Pulitzer Prize-winning musical diptych which explores “The Art of Making Art” in 1800’s Paris as well as late 20th-century Manhattan.
