statutory holidays - pay workers for day off?
So...Wednesday is May 1, Day of the Worker. My jardinero won't be working, probably won't be parading in Centro either. Do I have to pay him? Interesting that Cinco de Mayo isn't an important holiday here but it is in Door County, WI.
Thanks for any info. |

Not so sure about paying your gardener, I have a similar situation wit my house cleaner. Regarding Cinco de Mayo, there are holidays in Mexico that are confined to particular regions. Cinco de Mayo is only celebrated in Puebla, which is considered to be the "birthplace" of independence in Mexico (https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinco_de_Mayo).
Regarding the celebration of Cinco de Mayo in the US, it's a marketing ploy by the beer companies in 1989 (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/05/busin...story.html). |

Most historians will counter any possible claim of Puebla as the birthplace of Mexican independence. The battle in Puebla commemorated by 5 de Mayo, was against the occupying French army, some 50 years AFTER Mexico achieved her independence from Spain.
The slogan of the State of Guanajuato is “Cuna de la Independencia”, (cradle of Independence) in honor of Padre Hidalgo and his revolutionary movement which began in Dolores, September 15, 1810, with the first military action being here shortly later at the Alhóndiga. The entire country celebrates this time and event as Independence Day. You can thank Corona’s ad agency for the huge notoriety of a relatively minor historical event. |

If your employee is scheduled to work on that day then you pay them. Our construction crew has opted to take Friday afternoon and Saturday morning off instead. That way they have a long weekend.
But our housekeeper is not scheduled to work on Wednesday so she will not get paid for that day. |
