Rural Library made from Plastic Coke Bottles Closer to a Reality
Update on What We Have Done to Help Ourselves:

Since 2007, nonprofit 501? 3, Summerland (Tierra de Verano) has had the goal to build a rural library near the Presa de la Prisemia SW of GTO,GTO. The vision turned into a library out of recycled plastic Coke bottles when Steve Carew heard the idea. Steve is working very hard with people he knows in the USA , but grants take a lot of time. We need cash soon to continue with the plans during the dry season.

Please look at the work done in Columbia to create a homeless shelter, etc. .............. http://www.eco-tecnologia.com/portal/intro.php

Local people, including children, will fill 22,000 coke bottles (plastic) with sand and build the structure; UG students and staff have also offered to help. Our entire community will help, they want a library and they want to learn the alternative building techniques.

Steve found a volunteer architect ectorcontreras@gmail.com and construction engineer rolandihoracioF@hotmail.com ready to do the job totally with community volunteer labor. The drawings are done. The size is 1300 sq,. ft. plus a 300 sq. ft patio. The cost is $23,473. We have to raise $5,868.46 in the USA and the Federal Govt. of Mexico will donate the rest $17,605.38 under the tres por uno program. Local reporter Daniel Martinez 011-521-473-732-0191 or 011-521-473-112-65-78 or daniel_martinez89@live.com.mx just wrote an article about our volunteer work.

We?ve held many gourmet dinners here since 2008. We have $1,350 in cash earmarked for this project. We have obtained donated land, donated space to store bottles and fill them with sand, donated space to store books, donated books, used bilingual books ready to be shipped to Central Mexico and donated transportation from the USA to GTO for the books. I?ve written a book on teaching Spanish-speakers so that we can pay for bookshelves, electricity, chairs, etc. after the building is in place.

Help us, help them, help themselves??.

That is what we have done. We need YOU to donate $20+ via PayPal with the comment ?Rural Coke-Bottle Library.? Our websites have PayPal tabs to offer those who want to donate that option (www.summerlandmonastery.org and www.spanishimmersioneducation.org).

Jacqueline,

Payment sent via Paypal Unique Transaction ID #97F46394P5166104F
Will send more help in December.

There are currently 283 members on board, if everyone donates $20 USD = Problem Solved.
$20 USD is not much to ask for. These kids are the future and this is an opportunity for them to learn (put yourself in their shoes), think of it as your giving back or personal Philantrophy.

Will physical books be gone in five years? Interesting article here: http://www.cnn.com/2010/TECH/innovation/...tml?hpt=T2 about Nicholas Negroponte, founder of One Laptop per Child.

For $199, it's possible for individuals to buy a laptop for a child in the developing world through the website http://www.laptop.org/en/.

Thanks for the link to that website. I have seen reports on this on TV. Maybe this is the one that is recharged by riding a bike. That was pretty cool. I certainly don't want to see books disappear but the reality is that young people change the world. Remember when we did that? The computer not only gives them something to read, but does so much more. I clicked on the countries that are served and it looked like there were many sites in MX. I'll go look around some more. Maybe there is even some place near here.

Do you want empty bottles? If so what size and can they be from any brand of refresco?

If they're "gone," that's almost a tribute to the idea! But my guess is that to get another, a book will have to be returned.

Jacqueline,

Any word from the local officials that promised you aid?

Check your email, found you some books in Texas, I have no problem importing these for the kids.
