Adult co-housing
Hello, everyone

I've lived and worked in Guanajuato 20 years, plan to retire in the near future, and RIGHT HERE. Have been researching co-housing, a concept that is well-established in Europe and Scandinavia, and has recently gained momentum, especially among U.S. "boomers". In a nutshell, it involves one large community building which offers shared facilities combined with individual/independent cottages nearby. Residents typically share costs and responsibility for maintaining the shared living areas, and managing services, as well as participate democratically in decisions related to the community. This concept provides both the economic and social advantages of shared living, and the privacy of individual space. I have a house on a mountaintop overlooking the city that would be easily convertible to the communal house and land to build individual cottages. It's located in an ecological zone with water views of the Presa Soledad on one side and the city below on the other, about 20 minutes from the centro. Am looking for a group of 10-14 adults, ages 30-70 who would be interested in the possibilities of establishing a small cohousing community.

RE: Senior co-housing project
great idea. At this time i could not be involved but will follow with interest.

Maybe with several signatures of intent a local r.e. company would consider
building the place as rental housing.

RE: Senior co-housing project
Thanks for your interest, Doyle. Already have the wheelchair accessible central building (a 3 bedroom/2 bath house with large kitchen and sala, built on one level) and 7000m land for building cottages. Beautiful country setting with spectacular views. Will need to form a corporation or equivalent of an LLC, the idea being that residents will be shareholders who own the community equally. This is the ownership model most used in the U.S. for co-housing communities. It gives residents lifetime security and allows for the sale of their cottage, should they choose. The idea here is on a smaller scale, though, probably 8-10 residents maximum. There are many, many details to be worked out yet!

RE: Senior co-housing project
I'd like to mention that this is a not-for-profit communal venture. Here are a few of many articles that outline the general concept of co-housing:

Thanks Gto. list! Your forum has helped get the word out on the proposed co-housing project. Interest has now grown beyond mere idle curiosity. Anyone reading, please don't hesitate to ask further questions and I appreciate you spreading the word to others you know who might be interested. I'm now convinced it can HAPPEN!!

RE: Senior co-housing project
Hi Colibri, I find the concept appealing and would like to talk to you. My wife and I aren't old, being mid/late 30's, but we don't have kids (and no desire for them), and have pondered our lives when we eventually age. We'll be in GTO the end of this month for a few days. I will send you a private message and perhaps we can meet up.

BTW, I'm replying to this message rather than the new thread because it has more replies. I think it makes more sense to keep a conversation going instead of starting another.
