Taxi increase or rip off?

Last two days the fare from Centro to Paso de Presa (Cafe Tal) seemed to go from 40 to 45 pesos BUT yesterday a cabbie insisted it is now 50 pesos. Rip off or was there an increase?

I paid 50 pesos for a taxi ride a few days ago. And it's a fact the the price of gasoline increased 20% in January.

I do not mind an increase as it is still only about $2.50 US. I could not go a block for that at home. I just do not want to be treated like a tourist! LOL

We use taxis frequently. The normal fare was 40 pesos for the past year or two. It has jumped to 50p following the Jan gas price increase. Extra 10 if you make any quick stops along the trip.

I think it really depends on the driver. Yesterday I paid only $30 to go from Embajadoras to Baratillo. I had just missed the bus and was in a hurry, and the driver said it is just a short distance he didn't want to charge me more! And the trip to my home from the centro, a long, winding trip up the Calzada and around the Panoramica and then going down a narrow callejon, which usually costs $45-55 pesos, was just $40 pesos last night. Guess I had a lucky taxi day! However, I think being friendly and chatting with the drivers also helps, too.
