Goodbye, Guanajuato … goodbye.

Will I miss your quaint alleyways laden with garbage, trash, dog shit, and home to the occasional public restroom? No, I will not.

Will I miss the rudeness of locals, tourists, and gringos alike? No … no, I will not.

Will I miss the sight of workers combing through bags of trash in the dumpsters, salvaging what exactly?!? Plastic bottles? Glass jars? Ever-so-nimbly they skirt the toilet tissue I’ve discarded there, and I wonder about things like typhoid and other diseases which I cannot name. So, no.

Will I miss the smell of the sewer at Café Tal?!? ‘Not a chance.

Will I miss the art of side-stepping dog shit along city sidewalks and in the streets? Hardly.

Will I miss cafes such as La Vie en Rose and Café de la Paz which routinely close on what would seem to be whimsy? No.

Will the circus that is … tourists with cameras and guidebooks, Chinese curios, kitsch, countless nods to Cervantes (for no historical reason WHATSOEVER) (LOL), and the enduring face of Frida on virtually anything that can be sold … be missed??! You make me laugh.

Will I ever return to my beloved Guanajuato? Not in a million years.

[I never thought that holding a bus ticket to Mexico City and an airline ticket to South America could feel soooooooooooooooooooo good.]

You are obviously a person of very delicate sensibilities. You will need to choose your country in South America very carefully. Your risk of having to endure the distasteful sight of someone struggling to survive by sorting through garbage in your new destination is quite high. I strongly recommend an all-inclusive resort.
