megacable internet
do you have an experienced opinion of this service? The price is right but do they deliver rfeliably? Better than TelMex?

RE: megacable internet
I've had both TelMex and Megacable. The reliability of Megacable is, I think, a bit higher. Megacable's speed is 10 mBits/sec, and TelMex' was 5 mBits/sec. Not a huge difference if you're viewing YouTube or Netflix, but very noticeable if you're downloading large files.

RE: megacable internet
The speed of Telmex's Infinitum service may depend on the plan you have. I have the 599-peso plan, and I consistently get a download speed of 20 Mbps. As for reliability, I've had to call Telmex with a problem no more than five times in thirteen years. The reliability of one's service may depend on the neighborhood one lives in, on whether you have fiber-optic, and on whether you're Doyle. :)

RE: megacable internet
I've had Megacable for over a year. I think they're quite reliable. Be advised that the modems they install are by default highly insecure.

See my thread from last year for more:

RE: megacable internet
As Don said, it really depends on the neighborhood. I've had Telmex for 10 years and little trouble and with the $389 bundled plan I get a consistent 4.5&5 M download service. I live in a working class neighborhood that doesn't have a very high saturation. The bandwidth slows in the afternoon from about 2 to 7pm when kids get home from school but it is not that bad. I am usually using the internet in the morning, anyway.

I've had 4 modems in 10 years -- no problem! if the tech people can't reset it you just take it in to the office and they hand you a new one.

Had troubles a couple of years ago that took 5 weeks to resolve but Telmex always arrived when they said and the process involved settings in the office, check of line "on the pole" and subsequent rewiring, check of my (VERY) old line and subsequent replacement with new system that will accommodate fiber optics when it come to my neighborhood, and a number of other checks and replacements. Since the 9 or 10 visits got it all done and working well, I've had no trouble except for a couple of times needing to call to have the modem reset. One of these times they said that someone had tried to hack the modem and it had shut down and they changed the password and all is well again.

I've lived in Mexico for 17 years and have fewer horror stories here than in the USA -- but then, I don't look for things to always go wrong.
