Wild bird seed
Greetings,
We've managed to attract a number of pic-y-flores (hummingbirds) with our feeders and we're thinking that with some variety in our food offerings, we could attract any number of winged critters. Anyone seen a store that carries a variety of bird seed? Or other suggestions?

RE: Wild bird seed
Try MEGA, Comercial or Hidalgo Market. They all have mixed bird seed. For your Hummingbirds you need your special feeders which you will find at a pet store on Alh?ndiga in front of the Police Station, almost next to Cat-Can Veterinary. They may carry them there. All you have to do is fill them with a third of non white sugar and water and they will keep coming back daily. Be prepared to have to refill those daily, sometimes twice a day. Enjoy the wild life. We do. Martha.

RE: Wild bird seed

While we love watching the birds, we don't put out seed at home -- we have a talented kitty who takes advantage of the situation. As for the hummers, the use of non white sugar is fine but you must be very careful about mold. The feeders need to be changed and cleaned often. If mold develops, use some bleach in the wash water to be sure it is sterile.

We use refined sugar in a more concentrated solution. Lots of hummers. Right now, only the violet crowned and the broad billed are coming but stay alert for the blue throated and the magnificant hummers.

Good luck!

RE: Wild bird seed
Update for an old post.
We have found a nice wild bird seed mix available loose, sold per kilo at Arias Semillas, located in the strip of shops on the northeat side of Glorieta Santa Fe, near El Mundo del Piso. Ten pesos per kilo, a bargain! We expectd the shop to be agricultural oriented but it is actually pet focused with wide variety of dog and cat foods and supplies.
