Retired Expat Hangout
Where do retired expats hang out so we can chat with a few about what it is like to be an expat and live in GTO?
We are recently retired and now live in Chapala and will be there June 2 - 4th. Gracias in advance. |

RE: Retired Expat Hangout
Hi. While not personally inclined to hang-out too often, you might want to visit Cafe Tal as a first option to meeting local ex-pats and tourists. There is also a Gringo focused breakfast session each Sunday at rotating locations. The list is published here at first of month.

RE: Retired Expat Hangout
I ran into a few expats in Desmond's Irish Pub. It's on the same street running in front of the university heading towards the Alhondiga.
I have been in Guanajuato for awhile, so I don't know whether it is still open. |

RE: Retired Expat Hangout
Yes, Desmond's is still open. Although not the type of place you will find the jubilados. Its quite a younger crowd.
GTO is not Chapala or Ajijic or SMA where there are regular expat get togethers and hangouts (I think that is why those of us live here like it). While undoubtedly and naturally we gravitate towards each other, the expats do mix with the locals more so than in the other places I mentioned. And command of Spanish is much more necessary here. |

RE: Retired Expat Hangout
You might run into some expats in the Jardin de la Union or Plaza San Fernando, both have several outdoor restaurants.
Although DML is correct that Desmond's Irish Pub attracts a younger crowd, being near the university, I was always there in the early evening and did run into some local expats. Desmond was always a pleasure to talk to, but rarely in. Also, they had clean toilets, with paper!!! |
