RE: cost and availability of young men to move stuff, question about gas tank
Greed is a problem everywhere in the world, everyone always wants more and doesn't want to work harder to get it.
My cleaner did say this is the price take it or leave it so that bit was an easy decision for me because I needed one and she does what I want. I have also tried to do the right thing by mexican law and pay the decemenber bonus month payment and a weeks vacation per year, I did a lot of research to make sure I am properly following the laws for employing someone here. Even though she is only 2 days a week if you tell them what to do they are technically your employee. Water, ugh I hate it, they don't even stop by our house so I have to flag people down! I look at buying a filtration system and you need a UV style to kill the organisms. They are quite big and bulky and need to be fitted to the system (can't just attach to tap) and since I'm in a rental gave up on that idea. the 5L containers still aren't that great of water and we end up with slime whenever we change ours over that need to be cleaned out but it's the easiest option as far as i can see, at least they reuse them! |

Lisa,
No, you don't need a UV mechanism attached to a filtration unit. Whoever told you that is wrong. MULTI-PURE, in the USA, will send you a stainless steel filtration unit with an activated carbon filter that goes down to 1/2 micron or smaller. That will take out every chemical contaminant, and all bacteria. It won't strip the water of minerals like a Reverse Osmosis filter does. They are quick and easy to install, and also to remove when you leave. As for greed, it's not everyone and everywhere. There are places in Mexico, for example, where the prices are much lower than here, and many local folk will often give gifts of food, beer, coffee and soft drinks to a foreigner on a daily basis. But GTO was built on the largest gold and silver mines in the world, at one time, and it heavily affected the local populations' way of thinking here. |

Re: water filters
From the multi-pure website it says that it can get rid of down to 0.5 microns, (is it written somewhere else about the system, I just found it in faqs), which means it still wouldn't get rid of Bacteria: Cholera, E. coli, Salmonella: 0.2–0.5 microns and Viruses: Hepatitis A, rotavirus, Norwalk virus: 0.004 microns Which look like they need a microfilter or water purifier (not filter) for those sizes respectively. From a backpackers field manual website: There is a difference between a water filter and a water purifier. Filters do not filter out viruses, but there are water purifiers, like the PUR Scout, that pass the water through both a filter and an iodine compound that kills any smaller organisms that have passed through the filter. These purifiers kill all microorganisms down to 0.004 microns; however, the filter should not be used by people who are allergic to iodine. I have a super sensitive stomach so I have tried to do lots of research but there is so much out there, that I really don't know, hoping my stomach will just get used to it, at least a little bit! Looks like this is a common topic, looks like from Jan! I must have missed it http://www.gtolist.com/forum/thread-2343.html |
