Zona Recreativa de las Palomas

has anyone been to this wildlife preserve before? my guidebook says it is about 15 minutes north of GTO off highway 100. Do buses run here or do we need to take a taxi? Any info you can provide would be most helpful.

Yes, I've hiked there many times. It is not easily accessible by bus as it is a long way back from Santa Rosa. I think that some buses may stop at some local spots but that is not assured. I would say that it is more like 10>15 minutes past Valenciana. It is not a large area and the trails are not long but there are some spectacular views.

how much is a taxi, do you know? also, how would we get back? would it be easy to get a taxi back into town? is there a charge to get in to the area? are the trails easily marked?

No charge for entrance. The trails just wander but are not confusing. I think you could arrange with taxista to pick you up. (see private e-mail) No taxis cruising up there!!!

Taxis to Santa Rosa are spendy [150 or more]. Take a city bus up or go to Dos Rios and get a Dolores Hidalgo bus [tell the driver Santa Rosa - Cabana de Lolita]

On the return you should be able to flag down a Flecha or other 2nd class bus where the road to the Cabana de Lolita intersects the highway [this is basically about the same spot as the entrace to las Palomas] and the regular GTO-Santa Rosa city bus should stop at the same point.

Busses run about every 15 minutes.
