Gluten free tacos?
Anyone know of a place in GTO that serves or sells gluten free tortillas? We have a friend with gluten problems coming to visit.

Thanks!

RE: Gluten free tacos?
I thought corn was gluten free, but he says it bothers him. Maybe he's got other stuff going on.
Thanks for your reply

Corn is gluten free but if that bothers him then he won't be able to have tortillas (the gf ones are made from corn). You can buy rice pasta (in the asian section) and gluten free pasta (100% corn) at Mega. They also recently got GF instant oats which I have bought but not brave enough to try them yet, I'm not very trusting of foreign GF products. You can also buy quinoa to have a change from rice. The best spot to buy GF stuff in Freskos in león, i went and bought heaps of stuff, the pasta was either rice or corn but they also had bread, bread mixes, cake mixes, biscuits etc.
I have checked at unicornico azul and they don't really have GF stuff more ´low sugar´products inc natural yogurt without added sugar!!
I have photos of all the GF shelves at Freskos if you want them and you can always get someone who is going by there to buy you some stuff.

Thanks, Lisa. That's very helpful. As someone who has no problem devouring whatever is put in front of me, this is pretty new.

As a gluten free person I totally understand, I are a few crumbs if wheat tortilla the other day and had to take the day off work to lie on the couch! Not fun! Depending in how long they are here for byo - cereal/breakfast and snack bars. I'm a vego too because it's not hard enough :) but they are hardest things. I came with heaps of food and next time I go home I'm bringing back sooo much more!!

RE: Gluten free tacos?
Thanks for all that helpful information, Lisa! Could you tell us the address/directions for the Fresko store in Leon? I've never heard of it, but if it's good, I'd take a bus there.
About the quinoa -- have you found a place here to buy it in Guanajuato where it doesn't cost 5 times as much as in the U.S.? I brought back two 4 lb bags from Costco last January; $11 each (flew into Leon, no problem). When I brought one small bag from Peru, it was confiscated in D.F. as an agricultural product. A friend is bringing some next month from the U.S., and I'm hoping she gets the green light! Does anybody know whether or not quinoa is really on the list of prohibited items to bring into the country?
Thanks, Barbara

Fresko is at the Plaza Mayor in Leon (this is the only thing I can find on it - http://am.com.mx/Leon/negocios/busca-la-...03514.html), you access it from the outside.

Quinoa is about the same price in Australia as at Mega so I am used to paying the $11 or so price tag. The closest I would have found is 6x240g Quinoa and brown rice with garlic bags at Costco for $152.43 pesos. (I have photos on my phone) Costco did have super cheap maple syrup too which I use lots of! Quinoa is a seed so it would go by this rule:
Regulated Imports - Regulated imports may be brought into Mexico according to their origin and manufacturing process and they have fulfilled the importation requirements. I would always bring in packaged stuff, claim it and just run the risk of losing it, not too expensive for you at least :)

All the gf food is expensive too (and most stuff at Fresko) is expensive too but I don't have other options so I never really look at the prices. For example a packet/box of pasta ranges between 66 and 88pesos only really rice or corn options. Cocoa wafers 83pesos, loaf of bread 109pesos, chocolate biscuits 87pesos, table crackers 126 pesos, chocolate cake mix 72pesos, bread mix 109 pesos, pancake mix 88pesos, pizza crusts 164pesos. The only cereal they had was Barbaras brown rice crisps 71 pesos and puffins 94pesos, then some stuff you can buy at the shops here. I lots of it is Shar's which i don't love but select things are ok. That is pretty much everything, I tried to post a pic but they didn't work :(

RE: Gluten free tacos?
Luckily, I don't have to eat gluten free, so I save my gluten for regular cookies and cakes and try to stay away from bread (except when I eat at Bharati) and rolls. I prefer blue corn torillas, and have still have some quinoa pasta that somebody brought from the U.S.
I'll check out Fresko next time I'm in Leon. I didn't know that Mega sells quinoa. I always shop at small fruterias downtown and near my house, so I only go to Mega once or twice a year for things like mop replacements and "exprima facil" buckets. I've seen that quinoa with rice and some flavors here at Salud & Vida, but I don't like those. I prefer to cook it plain, and than I can eat it for breakfast with fruit and nuts, and later add whatever veggies and salsas to it for dinner. Good tip about the quinoa at customs. Lisa, Thanks again. Barbara
