RE: Crime Discussion on gtoconnect
For those who haven't read the "New Type of Crime in US" thread on that other Gto forum, the crime goes roughly like this: A woman (usually) pulls up to the self-service pump at a gas station, then gets out of the car to fill the tank. The bad guy then pulls up nearby and stealthily duck-walks over to the distracted woman's car, opens the passenger door, and steals her purse. The invaluable lesson one learns from this is that one should always lock one's car doors. Of course, you may have known that already.

One commenter on the thread advises that we in Guanajuato should take the threat seriously, as this sort of crime "will no doubt pass to here, quickly enough!"

Well, no, not really. That's because there are no self-service pumps in Guanajuato--or hardly anywhere else in Mexico. I think I saw one in northern Mexico once, years ago. But otherwise, we Mexicans tend to stay in our cars while the attendant fills 'er up.

I remain concerned about the "piranhas," however. I'm not a woman, but my D.A. could definitely use a trim.

Why anyone would exit their car without locking up is beyond me.
Not a woman nor do I carry a purse but have lots of CDs & electronics in car but always lock the doors as at my age a visit to the restroom is a important as pumping the gas.
PS Most cars today have automatic locking devices so only the drivers door should be unlocked when you exit.

RE: Crime Discussion on gtoconnect
Actually, crime at the gas pumps in the U.S. has gone high-tech. When a gas station goes completely self-service late at night, criminals drive up to pumps, pretend to pump gas, but then insert thin card reader shells over the actual credit card readers on the pumps. They then come back and retrieve their card readers before the day shift arrives, and then print out a fresh batch of credit cards with the credit card info recorded on their readers.
