RE: Violent Crime--Observations on the Ground?
Here's some hard numbers, assembled by Spanish-language Newsweek: http://nwnoticias.com/#!/noticias/guanaj...-de-mexico

Now, they didn't adjust for population, so here goes:

Léon: 1,274 homicides 2010-2016 / 1.6 million people = .0008
Celaya: 682 / 468K = .0014
Irapuato: 441 / 529K = .0008
Salamanca: 296 / 261K = .0011
Penjamo: 276 / 40K = .0069

This confirms, in spades, what I suspected about Penjamo, based on all the newspaper stories. I know a lot of people regard Léon and Irapuato as dangerous places. I've heard anecdotes about theft (some of it definitely organized) in Léon, but as far as homicides go, there are places that are worse.

By comparison:

Cincinnati: 468 / 332K = .0014
