If you like Trollope you will also enjoy reading English author John Galsworthy (1867-1933). Galsworthy covers the period of English life right after Trollope - the mid 1880s to the 1920s. He wrote a lot, including several plays, but in my opinion far and away his best works are The Forsyte Saga, A Modern Comedy, and End of the Chapter, collections of novels and shorter stories that trace the fictional Forsytes through several generations. Although fictional, his stories provide real insight into the lives of the wealthy merchant class in England. I think Galsworthy is a somewhat better writer than Trollope, but he is rather less sympathetic to his characters. At the outset of The Forsyte Saga he is plainly contemptuous of Soames Forsyte, his protagonist through much of the work, but he warms to his characters as he gets to know them better.
