I also have T-mobile/Movistar coverage pretty much everywhere in the centro (can't speak for elsewhere). You don't have to do anything to set up the included international data, which is quite nice.

That said, it can be pretty slow data (I wait for Web pages to load), so I use wifi whenever it's available.

Also note that T-mobile's plan is meant for traveling, not ex-pats. If you're going to be in Mexico for months, you'll need do to something else.
