There are still some active mines.
I can't really tell you much more about the communities that I mentioned, except I didn't see any indication that expats lived in Calderones, El Cubo, Monte de San Nicholas, or Santa Ana. I think there are some around Santa Rosa. Ask Michael at Los Campos restaurant about Santa Rosa. There were some nicer homes up valley from Santa Ana.

The tour I mentioned was very informative but more expensive than I would have preferred. Antonio speaks good english and can tell you all about those communities, and probably whether he thinks you would be comfortable living there.

I wouldn't consider any of those places flat, except maybe Calderones, but to me it seemed dusty and unattractive, maybe something that Clint Eastwood would ride into. My choice might be around Santa Rosa, but I don't know it very well.
