Anti-Trump demonstration on Sat, Jan 27
On Saturday, January 27, a group of us are planning to hold a peaceful demonstration in opposition to President Trump's xenophobic statements and policies, and in appreciation of Mexicans' acceptance of the ex-pat community.
We will gather on the steps of the Teatro Juárez at noon. We encourage anyone to participate who is appalled by the current US administration's recent actions and wants to express solidarity with Mexico. We expect to walk around the Jardin de la Unión once or twice starting at 12:30 p.m. If you bring signs, we ask that they convey polite messages rather than insults. In the U.S., protesters marched with signs about women's rights, education, the budget, health care, impeach Trump, etc. Our signs would be more relevant if they focus on the issues that affect Mexicans here: the wall, Trump's insults about Mexico and other countries, his anti-immigrant policies, and not supporting the Dreamers. Please have someone check your signs to make sure your Spanish spelling and grammar are correct. Do not make any comments about the Mexican government. Keep your cool if Trump supporters approach you and suggest they organize their own gathering to express their opinions. We hope that you can join us on Saturday! Barbara Davoli Sandra E. Ward |

RE: Anti-Trump demonstration on Sat, Jan 27
The Mexican constitution expressly forbids non-citizens to participate in the country's political life. ... Article 33 is unambiguous: “Foreigners may not in any way participate in the political affairs of the country.”
The planned march focuses on affairs outside Mexico. I doubt there could be any issue from any Mexican authority. Unspoken support, perhaps. |

This is the 3rd gathering I have helped to organize in the past year and I checked previously.
It is legal for non-Mexicans to participate in any kind of peaceful gathering or demonstration as long as the gathering does not mention Mexican politics, politicians, or political parties. |

RE: Anti-Trump demonstration on Sat, Jan 27
Don Juane, I'm sorry you won't be here on Saturday to join us.
There's not much I can do about the people who voted for #45. I did my part and sent in my absentee ballot. This gathering, and the others, are an attempt to show people here that we do not support him or his policies, especially those which adversely affect Mexico. The first gathering we had was on February 14, 2017 and the theme was AMISTAD SI, MURO NO. The second one was on March 20th to celebrate the first day of spring and Benito Juarez's birthday, with a double theme of some of Juarez's famous quotes about democracy and FLOWERS BLOOM, TRUMP WILL WILT (unfortunately he hasn't wilted yet). We decided to have another one this Saturday because of recent news and events. I haven't spoken with any Mexicans who like Trump, although I'm sure there are some. But lately, I've heard several anti-Trump comments which include an anti-gring@ jab, and I'd like to stop those kinds of anti-gring@ feelings before they grow stronger. It was very sad to hear a Mexican say two weeks ago "I wish all of you would go back to your f...ing country. Oh not you, you're okay." |

RE: Anti-Trump demonstration on Sat, Jan 27
I observed the demo a year ago finding it an incredibly futile effort although well attended.
FYI I not only voted for Clinton but manned the phone lines election day to no avail. I did that same the two previous elections with of course far better success. I guess having a crazy, narcissist spewing lie after lie running against a rather unlikable woman made this possible. Impeachment is now our only hope. Good Luck in you unfortunately futile effort! |

Thanks for you opinion and efforts in the past election. Perhaps if you had participated in one of our gatherings instead of observing, you would have had a better experience. Many Mexicans personally thanked me, and still thank me, for the two events we had last year. The year that we and the Mexicans who had gathered sang "Imagine," I saw several people of all nationalities with tears in their eyes. We were heartily cheered on when we walked around the Jardin. Both events were also positively covered in two local newspapers. Finally, I felt good about it. In addition, several of us followed up with phone calls and post-card writing to our reps in the U.S. Saludos, Barbara |
