Anybody want to check out Calderones?
Dear all,
We (Francisco and I) traveled to Gto in early March and managed to scout around quite a bit in the time we had, with the intent of living there in the future. We loved it - but of course, retirees have to consider whether it's realistic to climb stairs or just locate someplace to live where you can get a taxi/Uber. I've been Google-mapping my way around Gto and nearby environs, and came across the one flat-ish area that is reasonably near Gto, the town of Calderones. It's on top of a mountain and it looks very walkable. The population is 881, so it's tiny, with not much more than a couple of mom-and-pop shops. However, it looks like they have a high school that teaches via the internet, so I'm hoping there's good internet service there. The elevation is 2280 meters / 7480 feet, and from some points around town, you have views of distant mountains, and you can look down on Gto. There is public bus service to/from Gto. The nearest hospital is 22 minutes away by Google driving estimate over good roads. But since the town is so small, if you were going to consider living there, I think you'd have to buy land and build. We're back in the U.S., planning another trip in 2-3 months, but I wondered if anyone would be interested in scouting it out, or knows anything about it. Please see the map and photos, below. The starting point for the drive was the English Language Library/Meritorious Normal School in SE Gto. I'd love to hear back... Janet |

RE: Anybody want to check out Calderones?
Antonio at gcacomixtle@hotmail.com is a retired mining engineer. He and his daughter run Cacomixle tours, Cacomixle.com
Recently we arranged with them for a day trip through Calderones, El Cubo, Monte de san Nicolas, Santa Rosa, and Santa Ana. Olivia and her husband own the store in El Cubo and speak good english. She is a moderator on this facebook page and would probably give you advice on the villages outside of Guanajuato. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1008970842493493/ In case the link doesn't work, the group is called Lovers of Guanajuato. |

@Izzenhood, gosh, that's interesting and thanks for those contacts. Could you say more about your tour? What were your impressions? Are the mines still active?

RE: Anybody want to check out Calderones?
There are still some active mines.
I can't really tell you much more about the communities that I mentioned, except I didn't see any indication that expats lived in Calderones, El Cubo, Monte de San Nicholas, or Santa Ana. I think there are some around Santa Rosa. Ask Michael at Los Campos restaurant about Santa Rosa. There were some nicer homes up valley from Santa Ana. The tour I mentioned was very informative but more expensive than I would have preferred. Antonio speaks good english and can tell you all about those communities, and probably whether he thinks you would be comfortable living there. I wouldn't consider any of those places flat, except maybe Calderones, but to me it seemed dusty and unattractive, maybe something that Clint Eastwood would ride into. My choice might be around Santa Rosa, but I don't know it very well. |

It's very common to see people riding down the street on horseback there. And, if you walk in the general direction of La Bufa, there's an authentic Boot Hill. Walk a bit further in that direction, and you'll come to a caldera. That's where the name of the town came from. |
