Cellphone Registration Deadline - doncoulter - 04-08-2010 There was recently some discussion about a possible extension of the deadline for registering one's cellphone. The C?mara de Diputados approved such an extension, but the Senado has declined to go along, according to today's Correo newspaper. The upshot is that cellphones must be registered by this Saturday, April 10. If you do not register your phone, service will supposedly be cut off. Although it's possible to do the registration procedure with a text message (see the Telcel website for details), the easiest thing to do for most people is simply to take your phone to the office of your carrier, most likely Telcel or Iusacell. They will want to see some identification, and reports vary as to what kind of ID they demand. So be on the safe side and take all the usual stuff: passport; FMT, FM2, or FM3; and a utility bill if you have one. Don RE: Cellphone Registration Deadline - JRG - 04-09-2010 Telefonica-Movistar has announced that it will not cut off service for those clients who have failed to register their cellphones by the government ordered deadline. It will go to court to fight for it's clients many of whom are poor and unable to comply with requirements in that they lack a CURP identification or even a birth certificate. Additionally, the company says registration by text message has been problematic. http://www.milenio.com/node/418665 John RE: Cellphone Registration Deadline - JRG - 04-14-2010 Funny as the TV is reporting that 5 million cells phones are registered in the name of Felipe Calderon and 4 million in the name of Carlos Slim. Cell phones are not being cut off when not registered. John |
