New mall by Jardin del Cantador - roberb7 - 11-20-2016 The Office Depot opened Saturday, and they're advertising a lot of Buen Fin deals. The other stores that are definite are Bodega Aurrera, Carl's Jr. and Porrua (book store). I've heard from work of mouth that there will be a Sanborn's, but haven't seen a confirmation. RE: New mall by Jardin del Cantador - jesm - 11-21-2016 Reads like it hopes to be full speed before Christmas. The bodega aurrera is a Walmart/wal-mex smaller concept. They must have concluded we could not support a full size super center. Thankfully. http://periodicocorreo.com.mx/se-inaugurara-fin-mes-aurrera-plaza-cantador/ RE: New mall by Jardin del Cantador - roberb7 - 11-22-2016 So, it's been christened Plaza Cantador. Still no confirmation of the Sanborn's. (If there is one, I want to be there on opening day.) Interesting factoid about the Jardin del Cantador; according to Google Maps, the name of the park is Parque Porfirio Diaz. RE: New mall by Jardin del Cantador - doncoulter - 11-22-2016 ". . . according to Google Maps, the name of the park is Parque Porfirio Diaz." I'm learning to have less confidence in Google Maps in these parts. The other day in León, it took me the wrong way down a one-way street. Contributing to the problem was a grand total of zero one-way signs. There wasn't even one of those subtle little arrows that mean "one way" around here. A suddenly approaching semi-trailer clarified the matter. RE: New mall by Jardin del Cantador - roberb7 - 11-26-2016 I heard today that the Bodega Aurrera is opening on Wednesday. And the Sanborn's isn't happening. RE: New mall by Jardin del Cantador - doncoulter - 11-27-2016 One hopes the parking ramp is ready for Aurrera. I drove past Plaza Cantador on Thursday, and the parking entrance was blocked by orange traffic cones. One also hopes there will be enough parking spaces. Parking in Guanajuato is so often an afterthought, or a never-thought. Incidentally, Aurrera was formerly known as Aurrerá. They seem to have dropped the accent, for mysterious reasons. RE: New mall by Jardin del Cantador - mr bill - 11-28-2016 Don Coulter writes, "Incidentally, Aurrera was formerly known as Aurrerá. They seem to have dropped the accent, for mysterious reasons. " Curiouser still Aurrerá doesn’t appear to be a Spanish* word at all whereas Aurerra is at least Basque. But that too gets a dose of confusion tossed in by the opening line of its Wikipedia entry which states "Aurrerá (word from the Basque language "aurrera" which means "forward")". Interesting company history though in the Wikipedia article here. Aurrera however it is/was spelled was Walmart's gateway to Mexico. A similar Wiki on Bodega Aurrerá appears here omits the reference to a "defunct supermarket chain" * see http://www.rae.es/search/node/Aurrera and http://www.rae.es/search/node/Aurrerá RE: New mall by Jardin del Cantador - doncoulter - 11-28-2016 Thanks for the language lesson, Mr. Bill. Oddly enough, "Aurrera" isn't the only Basque store name you'll find in Mexico. There's also "Euzkadi," a maker and retailer of tires. (I think they're the same as Continental tires, but I can't be bothered to do the research.) In Basque, "Euzkadi" means . . . "Basque." In other words, it's how the Basques says "Basque." Decades ago, I traveled for a few days in southern Mexico with a Finnish woman who was doing a graduate degree in Basque Studies at the University of Nevada. Upon seeing an Euzkadi store, she became very excited and even more curious as to why a tire retailer in Mexico would have a Basque name. She insisted on approaching a guy who was busy installing tires on a vehicle and asked him about the origin of the store's name. He had no clue, not surprisingly, and looked at her as if she must have a screw loose. He probably figured she was just another crazy gringuita. RE: New mall by Jardin del Cantador - pianoheat - 11-29-2016 I was hoping for an HEB aurrera I don't think offers much of anything new that we can't get at La Comer I do feel they have better prices on appliances and Tequila so thats good RE: New mall by Jardin del Cantador - roberb7 - 11-29-2016 Yeah, I would have preferred a number of different stores over Bodega Aurrera, too. But I learned after I purchased a complete set of appliances that Aurrera's prices on appliances beat everyone else's by a significant amount. |
