Leon airport transportation options ??? - Gigi Harrison - 08-30-2014

I have friends coming who would like to find out the best and least expensive way to get from Leon airport to GTO Centro. Is there a bus? The airport taxis are very expensive. Is there a reliable local driver who does airport runs? Thanks, Gloria

Hola Since 2003 i have praised the services of Ramiro Gutierréz. He's never missed a beat. Last i checked he charges $40 u.s. equivalent. --dp

There is no bus from the airport. Your friends could, however, take a cab from the airport to the Silao bus terminal, then catch a bus to Guanajuato. A cab to Silao costs 150 pesos, versus 390 to Guanajuato, according to the airport website. Primera Plus buses from Silao cost 31 pesos, and less luxo service would cost less.

Total cost would be less than half what the airport taxis get, and much less than US$40.

For comparison, BJX in-terminal "official"taxi service charges 450p to go Centro. About $36US.

Cheap is not always/seldom is Best. But for cheaper even than Don's suggestion and if your friends are traveling light -- and its light out-- they could take a little hike out to the highway and cross over to the other side. The 1st class busses will not stop for them there so they need to head toward the pedestrian overpass just before Col. Nuevo Mexico where the Silao local busses stop. They might get a Metropolitano to GTO with a stop in Silao but most likely a local Silao bus then a Metropolitano to GTO. Maybe 50 pesos per person overall -- and keeping it cheap take a local 5 peso city bus in GTO instead of a 50 peso taxi ride [If your friends get lucky the Metro may continue to Dolores - in that case they could get off near the Plaza de las Ranas or at Dos Rios]

A couple of reasons the Airport authorized cabs are 'expensive'*:1 they are insured 2. they can't take return fares from GTO back to BJX

* JESM you make a good point: at $36 for a 25 minute and maybe 30 km ride it is something you can't do almost anywhere in the US.

I also use a driver that I found on this message board -- Israel Torres 473-597-3953.

He has been very reliable and always punctual. He charges $450 (only $34US).

While I understand the need for an inexpensive way of coming in to GTO it will depend greatly on your friends. How much luggage do they have? What time are they arriving (day or night)? Do they speak Spanish?

Because there is no direct bus in from the airport, sometimes it is worth it to shell out the extra $10-15.
