Pretty sure the Oxxo staff on Calzada de Guadalupe stole my wallet. - Mykul - 01-27-2014

Stopped in on the way home tonight and between juggling a dog and getting everything into my bag I am fairly certain I left my wallet on the counter. It was literally minutes on the way home when I realized and went back. The only girl there at the time said yes she saw me take it out but didn't know what happened after. There is a camera pointed at the register so I said...easy enough, show me the tape of me taking it and leaving. No, that requires a password blah blah blah and I think the camera may be broken.

My wife returned and got the same story. There was a bit of cash but more importantly, my residency visa, Canadian drivers license and credit cards.
We contacted the regional office in Leon right away so we will see what happens. We will return to the store again tomorrow and try and get them to play the tape. Not looking forward to the nightmare of paperwork ahead if I cannot get my cards back.

Bit of an update - the staff miraculously found my wallet while taking the trash out last night. In a dumpster. In the dark.
Cash was gone of course but at least I got my residency permit back and my drivers license.

Glad you got it back! Were your credit cards returned as well?

Yeah, got everything back except the cash....a days sales from the restaurant, which sucks, but not as much as renewing my visa would suck so I will take the silver lining on this one.

I would still press for the regional police to see if the security camera was working ( the OXXO store chain is owned by COCA COLA and not likely to leave security lax with non-functioning cameras) and captured the action during that time that you were there in the restaurant and left.

A bit of unsolicited advice, Mykul, which you may take or leave: Don't carry credit cards unless you have immediate need for them. Don't carry your Canadian driver's license unless you're driving. Don't even carry your visa. You really don't need your visa with you at all times, despite what some people may tell you.

Finally, don't carry a wallet. If you don't carry one, you can't forget it on the counter at Oxxo. If you absolutely must carry a wallet, make it a slender one, and carry it in a front pocket. Fold your bills in half and carry them separately, in the other front pocket. If you have a lot of cash after a good day at the restaurant, maybe stash some of it in a shoe.

You were lucky this time, in that you got most of your stuff back. I hope there isn't a next time, but take precautions just in case.

Don

Thanks for the advice all.
Another update: We contacted Oxxo's regional office in Leon and they had the store owner contact us directly. He insisted we meet him this morning to view the camera footage (it was of course working just fine).
The camera clearly showed the store employee taking my wallet. She is losing her job as a result and it sounds like they will refund our cash as well.
Handled very well by Oxxo.

And yes, you are of course correct, I shouldn't be carrying around all of my stuff all the time. Just a habit from back home where you wouldn't dream of leaving home without your wallet. I am making copies of my relevant ID and stashing the originals. Lesson learned.

Sooooo glad I did not have to replace my visa and drivers license.

Agree with Don. I carry a Copy of my Passport, my California Drivers Licences, one bank card & enough cash for the day. That's it. No CC & No (in my case) Tourist card.
I sometimes leave the Bank Card if I know I will not need any additional funds.

Thanks for letting us know all the steps you went through and that OXXO cooperated big time. About the residence visa: as it is a useful ID I carry a 2-sided copy that a papeleria made for me (just be sure you don't take it by mistake when you go to the airport; it is not a substitute there.) So glad this all had 90% happy ending.

By the way, here's another plug for OXXO. You can stop off to pick up a cuppa any of six flavors of Celestial Seasons tea on your way home from a late concert.

That's good news that you contacted the regional OXXO office and found working video evidence of the theft, and that you got refunded for any monetary loss also. I figured that a COCA COLA operation would NOT leave security cameras non-functioning.
