Telmex modem? - jesm - 06-28-2013

We have the Telmex DSL with standard issue modem and wireless router. Wireless signal seems ok but some coverage issues in lower floor. Are we ok to purchase a Belkin or other brand to use as they seem to have stronger signals for more distant uses?
Also want to install a few surge protection devices for sensitive electronic items, suggestions as to what/where available.
Thanks for all help.

Jes you need to have the Telmex modem/router as #1 in your system. You cannot replace it as other modems will not have the Telmex firmware on them.

What you can do is add an access point. I use TrendNets but other brands will so as well - I'm thinkng of getting a D-Link Extreme or something similar. With my TrendNet I have it on the roof under a plastic tub and it broadcasts throughout the compound. Just plug in an Ethernet cable to one of the Telmex ports and connect to your access point which will then emit its own signal [maybe there s a way to do it WiFi from Telmex to the access point but I have not looked into it]

Sr Bill,
Very useful info, as always, thanks. Now investigating plug-in extenders that use house wiring to convey signal to distant points in casa. Take care.
