links to 2 Economist maps about violence in Mexico - raquelita - 11-24-2012 AND an incisive article today (whether or not you agree with everything) chiding the lack of US attention to Mexico: http://www.economist.com/news/leaders/21567081-america-needs-look-again-its-increasingly-important-neighbour-rise-mexico?fb_ref=activity ------------------------ https://www.economist.com/node/21566718 (compares murder rates state by state with rates in other countries, Finland, US, etc) ------------------------ http://www.economist.com/blogs/graphicdetail/2012/11/mexican-drug-war?fsrc=nlw|newe|11-23-2012|4228644|38492502| specifically about drug-related-murders, state by state RE: links to 2 Economist maps about violence in Mexico - cam00 - 11-24-2012 The 1st link showing comparisons to geographically sized equivalent localities in other parts of the world is very interesting. As for the 2nd link, showing a country-wide map of MEXICO and deaths per state due to drug violence---it's VERY difficult to believe that GTO STATE has31 compared to DF and MEXICO CITYS' combined 9 people who died ( if I read the enlarged confusing portion of the map correctly) It just doesn't make sense, as DF and MEX CITY are way more populated and violence-prone than GTO state. I'll take the 2nd graph with a grain of salt. RE: links to 2 Economist maps about violence in Mexico - doncoulter - 11-24-2012 You're reading the map wrong, cam00. Take a closer look and you'll see that the numbers you refer to are not total deaths but rather the percentage increase in "drug-related murders" over last year. In the state of Guanajuato the increase is 31 percent, while in D.F. it's 8 percent. As for absolute numbers of drug-related murders, these are indicated on the map by the color coding. Guanajuato state is white, meaning fewer than 50 such murders this year, while D.F. is in a shade of pink indicating between 250 and 499 murders. This issue of the Economist offers a special report including, in addition to the items Raquelita mentions, several articles about Mexico. They present a far different picture of Mexico than one typically sees in international media. I recommend them highly to anyone living here, and to anyone else who cares about Mexico. Don Coulter RE: links to 2 Economist maps about violence in Mexico - jesm - 11-24-2012 Don, A huge word of appreciation for the Economist link. As you advise, this is must-read if you care about Mexico and its future. Balanced and well researched, it hits every critical issue, pro and con, impacting this country. Jesse RE: links to 2 Economist maps about violence in Mexico - raquelita - 11-28-2012 I think it was yesterday that the New York Times featured an article on the Mexican economy instead of on drugs. Maybe a shift at last?ng RE: links to 2 Economist maps about violence in Mexico - roberb7 - 11-28-2012 Quote:I think it was yesterday that the New York Times featured an article on the Mexican economy instead of on drugs. Are you referring to this one? http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/28/world/americas/mexico-seeks-to-recast-relationship-with-us.html It's almost entirely about Queretaro, but still good news. |
