WIFI INTERRUPTIONS? - Heather - 09-19-2012 We have Telmex infinitum wifi here in Presa and have noticed a considerable number of short and longer interruptions spasmodically over the last month. Is anyone else experiencing these problems? Or could it be a (once again) storm damaged modem? Thanks, Heather RE: WIFI INTERRUPTIONS? - kasugie - 09-19-2012 We haven't experienced interruptions in our home, but friends living around Embajardoras are complaining about the same. Telmex is in the process of upgrading Guanajuato and other cities in Mexico to higher-speed fiber optic network. Guanajuato is supposed to go on the new network about a year from now. While Telmex won't be offering gigabit speed service, the reliability and speed will be dramatically improved. But, in the meantime, we can probably expect service outages and little effort on the part of Telmex to correct problems with the infrastructure that will be going away. RE: WIFI INTERRUPTIONS? - The Duck - 09-20-2012 Heather, I have been experiencing the same phenomenon too and not on WiFi but on an Ethernet cable connection to the modem. I had to constantly yank the cable out of my laptop and reset it to get the connection back. The cable was good and wasn't the problem. On the various WiFi connections around the property our guests were experiencing the same problem. On day I noticed in my WiFi manager that one of the access points was un-secured. The WEP protection had been removed and it wasn't done by me. A geeky neighbor had hacked into the system. It really wasn't too hard to do. The access point identified itself by brand name and through some Googling and a little trial and error to get its control panel IP address and using default user name and password [admin/admin in most cases] the neighbor went in and un-locked the box. I have since changed its codes and locked it to such a point the only way in now is a hard reset accomplished by inserting an unbent paper clip in the hole in the back of the box. Since doing this I have had no more problems. Re kasugie and Telmex fiber optic cable: here in la Presa they have been in place for several months. See related post re Telmex Speed Increases RE: WIFI INTERRUPTIONS? - peddler665 - 09-20-2012 I experience this in many locations in Mexico plus in more remote places in the US (IE The Trinity Alps, CA) especially in the evening. Where I stay in Zihua/Ixtapa I can stream all day but forget the evenings when I presume lots of others on line. Same in Patzcuaro, Morelia & Guanajuato. RE: WIFI INTERRUPTIONS? - mr bill - 09-20-2012 Fiber Optic update - Heather things should be getting better - as I write this there is a crew working in San Juan de Dios installing the FO cable. They have set up a base in my parking spot and there are a few others guys up and down the street with ladders. ![]() RE: WIFI INTERRUPTIONS? - kasugie - 09-20-2012 Basically, as each neighborhood or block comes online with the fiber optic network, the GTO IP cloud needs to reconverge with the upgraded routing and switching equipment in the Telmex central station, and everyone here gets knocked out while that is going on. Not much any customer can do about it, aside from "downgrading" your Telmex service to a cheaper plan and using the savings to purchase wireless data service from iUSACell, Movistar, or Telcel, as a back-up. When I spoke with the Telmex marketing and engineering people, they believed it would take till the fall of 2013 to install and convert everyone here onto the new fiber optic network. I'm only hoping they'll be offering (and guaranteeing) a service with 20 MB/sec, for both uploads and downloads. |
