The Department of State issued a new Travel Warning for Mexico on February 8, 2012, to consolidate and update information about the security situation and to advise U.S. citizens of additional restrictions on the travel of U.S. government personnel. Thanks, Martha, very much for posting this useful update. I'm proud that our State Department made its detailed report in a neutral tone. Depressing that we're being hemmed in outside the major cities; some areas where I used to travel freely without worrying I may not visit again for a while, but the good news is that many favorite destinations are so far outside the "battle zones" (my phrase), including our own state, Hidalgo, State of Mexico, Chiapas, Oaxaca and i don't remember about Puebla and some other states.
Still, someone I know whose daughter was going to school in (San) Juan de Llanos in our own municipio said she was glad her daughter could transfer from that town where there were "so many narcos." So let's not be too complacent about no travel advisory (yet) for our state.
