Seeking literary suggestions "historic novels" - tjrosa - 05-23-2010

I have a read a few novels with some historical basis that I really enjoyed -- Rain of Gold, Daughter of Hummingbird, Headless Angel. Does anyone have any others to suggest? I am particularly interested with novels set around the time of the independence movement or the revolution or the Mexican / American war. Also any set in the US around the time of the Civil War, etc. Thanks so much.

Jorge Ibarguengoitia's sendups of the independence movement, Los Pasos de Lopez (The Steps of Lopez) and of the Mexican revolution (Los Relampagos de Agosto). Both are short, funny and informative. d I think at least one of these is available in English translation. Elena Garro's novel about the aftermath of the revolution, Recuerdos del Porvenir (Memories of the Future)is grimmer, available in English translation. In case you haven't read Gone with the Wind, that's the classic novel about the US Civil War. I read my way through the paperback on my first trip to Mexico.

"In the Shadow of the Angel" by Kathryn S. Blair is a novel based on real people and set during the time of the M?xican Revolution. The translation into Spanish was widely sold in M?xico, but the self-published English version is harder to find.
