RE: Is there Baseball or Basketball in Gto? - jesm - 03-11-2013 Yes the Mexican pitcher should not have thrown at the Canadian batter, but equally in baseball you don't try and bunt yourself onto first base with a big lead in the final inning, poor sportsmanship on both sides IMO. RE: Is there Baseball or Basketball in Gto? - doncoulter - 03-11-2013 You would have a good point, jesm, if this had been a typical baseball game. But it wasn't. This was part of a tournament in which the run differential is factored into the standings. Therefore, bunting with a big lead, while normally frowned upon, is totally legit. It's also, of course, totally within the rules. Trying three times to hit the batter, and finally succeeding, is not. A shameful day for Mexican sports. Don RE: Is there Baseball or Basketball in Gto? - philyrossy - 03-11-2013 Don is absolutely correct, and Canada did NOT win by enough runs to prevent them from having to qualify for the event the next time it is held.:( Also, no one was punished, so I guess the Mexicans knew nothing would happen to them and went ahead with their lack of class act despite the warnings.:-/ Wonder if this was a chance for retaliation for Mexico because Canada also defeated the Mexican Little League Champs in the last World Series? Maybe. RE: Is there Baseball or Basketball in Gto? - roberb7 - 03-23-2013 Here's the latest: http://www.am.com.mx/guanajuato/superdeportivo/un-a%C3%B1o-sin-beisbol-4533.html It says that they're having another meeting on April 2 to set the 2013 season. In other news, the Rieleros de Aguascalientes home opener is today at 6 PM against Vaqueros de Laguna (Torreon). Game on! March 6 - roberb7 - 03-25-2013 Another story in AM: http://www.am.com.mx/guanajuato/superdeportivo/fijan-reinauguracion-5182.html They're going to have an official re-opening, and a game between Pur?sima del Rinc?n, which is leading the Liga Regional Alte?a, and a team of local all-stars. Doesn't say what time things get started. Game on! March 6 - roberb7 - 04-06-2013 I found out, at 9:30 this morning that the re-opening ceremony for the renovated Parque Jos? Aguilar y Maya started at... 9:30 AM. I showed up there about 11:15, and the players were on the field warming up. The game got going about 11:45, and I watched two innings of it. Some observations: This was a very family-friendly event. There was a good crowd. The ballpark was nowhere near full, but most of the seats in the shade were occupied. The caliber of play can be accurately described as "beer league". One generalization I can make about Latino baseball I've watched over the past few years is lack of speed, and today's action fits that generalization. I saw two stolen base attempts, and they were both out at second, and not even close. On another play, the runners at first and second tried to advance on a passed ball, and the result was, out at third. None of the money spent on the renovation went into the scoreboard. Also, they put up new chain-link fencing to protect the crowd from foul balls. I don't approve of this; the visibility behind that fencing is not good. Playing outfield in this ballpark is an easy job. If you play in right field, they're never going to hit it to you. If you play in left field, just do some neck exercises before the game starts, so you're prepared to watch the ball as it flies over your head. There was a mascot: a guy in a red devil costume. Looked pretty cool. And now, the most important question: when's the next game? I don't think this has been set yet. What I was told is, the schedule will be posted on the wall of the ballpark. Game on! May 18 - roberb7 - 05-17-2013 Well, it seems that one inauguration for the refurbished ballpark wasn't enough, so there will be another one at 6 PM Saturday, May 18. On another note, I went to Aguascalientes in the middle of this week, and took in a double-header between Los Rieleros and the Saraperos de Saltillo. (They played two because Tuesday night's game was rained out.) I can report that Aguascalientes has a good-quality ballpark (renoved in 2004), and friendly and enthusiastic fans. The quality of the concessions is below Latin American standards (burros and potato chips, no hot dogs, tacos, tamales, or tortas) and beer is 30 pesos. The choice is Modelo claro or Victoria oscura, and in two of three cases, I was delivered a claro when I asked for an oscura. My box seat cost 120 pesos. Re: Game on! May 18 - roberb7 - 05-18-2013 OK, here's the rest of the story for Saturday, May 18. They are playing two exhibition games. The second one with be over-40 players, and one of the teams is Lagos de Moreno, which finished second in the most recent Mexican over-40 national championship. The Municipal League season finally starts on Thursday, May 23. There will be games on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays throughout the season.
